UP NISMED

The National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED) is a research and extension unit of the University of the Philippines (UP) whose goal is to raise the quality of science and mathematics education in the Philippines. UP NISMED believes that ’’learners learn most effectively from experiences that are engaging, meaningful, challenging and relevant, and from teachers who facilitate construction of knowledge from such experiences.

UP NISMED has three major functions: curriculum development, teacher training, and research. It also performs extension work as a natural outgrowth of these three major functions.

UP NISMED is responsible for the Content Localization and Teacher Professional Development components of the Intel® Teach Program (In-service and Pre-service). This includes developing and conducting the Philippine version of the Essentials Course, designing and implementing Enhancement Workshops and Forums for Master Trainers (MTs), providing Pedagogical Support to MTs, and monitoring Unit Plan implementation and the conduct of school-based Participant Teacher Trainings.

UP NISMED’s Philosophy
“Learners learn most effectively from experiences that are engaging, meaningful, challenging and relevant, and from teachers who facilitate construction of knowledge from such experiences.”

“Ganap na natututo ang mga mag-aaral sa pamamagitan ng mga gawaing makabuluhan, may hamon sa kakayahan at nakatutugon sa pang-araw-araw na buhay. Ito ay sa pamamagitan ng mga gurong gumagabay sa kanila upang makabuo ng karunungan mula sa ganitong mga karanasan.”
