In-service Program

The implementation of the Intel® Teach Program in the Philippines is a joint endeavor of the government and Intel Technology Philippines, Incorporated. In 2001, the Intel® Teach Essentials Course Program was launched with partner agencies from both the government and private sector which include the Department of Education (DepED), Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED), EduQuest Inc., and, in 2005, the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED). Through these concerted efforts, the program has been positioned as the major teacher-training component of the government’s computerization programs for basic education, such as the Personal Computers for Public Schools Project and Adopt-a-School Program.

The objectives of the Program are as follows:

  • to create a pool of national trainers
  • to enhance participants competencies in developing 21st century teaching and learning approaches, such as student-centered instruction, critical thinking, and collaboration
  • to prepare them to conduct the same training in the regions and in their own schools/divisions

Seventy nine Master Trainers (MTs) from 34 schools were selected for the Intel®Teach In-Service Program through a competitive selection process. Of these, 71 completed the Essentials Course in May 2005.

Twenty seven MTs trained in previous years were also selected for Enhancement Training. Of these, 18 completed the training activity in May 2005. These MTs are expected to echo the Essentials Course to 20 PTs as well.

In addition to these teacher professional development activities, the program also provides continuing Pedagogical Support and Monitoring or PSM, primarily to facilitate the implementation of Unit Plans and to enhance the preparation of teachers for PT training. PSM is directed by Senior Trainers (STs) from UP NISMED and a team of support providers consisting of selected in-service and pre-service MTs trained since 2003.

Teacher professional development is further supported by the provision of training and support services to regional, division, and school administrators and IT coordinators. Two representatives from each participating unit have been selected to participate in a series of Strategic Planning for ICTs in Basic Education activities between July 2005 and May 2006. The objective of these activities is to provide participants with the knowledge and tools necessary for drafting a five-year, organization-wide technology plan as mandated by the Department of Education in the National Framework Plan for ICTs in Basic Education 2005-2010. Continuing Planning and Management Support and Monitoring is also provided.
